A K-12 International Baccalaureate Continuum Division
Since 2014, students in Fredericksburg City Public Schools have been exposed to the International Baccalaureate program in grades 6-12. Now the school division has a new IB status.
FCPS is only the second division in the state of Virginia to become a K-12 IB World School division. School divisions that offer at least three of the IB programmes are considered IB Continuum School Divisions.
After being evaluated on teaching and other factors, the IB organization recently granted authorization for both elementary schools, Lafayette Upper Elementary School and Hugh Mercer Elementary School. Fredericksburg City is now IB certified from primary to middle to high school.
Dr. Marceline Catlett, Interim Superintendent, gladly expressed, “Fredericksburg City Public Schools is excited to make history by becoming the second school division in the state of Virginia to become a K-12 International Baccalaureate Continuum Division! Division wide our students, teachers, support staff, and administrators have worked tirelessly to accomplish this success.”
The rigorous programmes improve education by building on characteristics of internationalism, intercultural understanding, a study of a broad range of topics, specific focus on learning languages, developing skills for lifelong learning, providing opportunity for collaboration and research, and finally, encouraging students to become responsible, active members of their community.”
