FCPS IB Programs

Welcome to the FCPS IB programs webpage. FCPS is committed to student achievement and preparation for both 21st century careers and college-readiness. The International Baccalaureate (IB) has been adopted by FCPS to assist in reaching those goals. At James Monroe High School, the IB Diploma Program (DP) for grades 11-12 has been implemented, and at both James Monroe High School and Walker-Grant Middle School, the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) for grades 6-10 is authorized. FCPS has entered the candidacy phase to seek authorization to offer the Primary Years Program (PYP) at both Hugh Mercer Elementary School and Lafayette Upper Elementary School. This would establish FCPS as an IB Continuum school division where students would be exposed to the IB’s approach to teaching and learning from grades K to 12.

The IB philosophy and mission statement state, “These programmes (sic) encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners…”

So what is the IB?

At FCPS schools, the International Baccalaurate® (IB) has been implemented at James Monroe High School, is also authorized to be offered at Walker-Grant Middle School, and is in the candidacy phase for seeking authorization to offer it at Hugh Mercer and Lafayette elementary schools. We here at FCPS feel that our students can meet the demands of today’s challenges in education and life after primary education by offering the IB to as many of our students in K-12 as possible. Per our mission statement: “Fredericksburg City Public Schools will provide a quality education that assures opportunity and equity for each student. Our motto ‘Excellence in Education’ embodies a commitment to empower students to develop personal responsibility for meeting high academic standards and to become productive citizens in a global society.” The IB helps us to live up to and meet the high standards we have set for ourselves as educators and for our students and their futures.
